Hurricane Sandy Bradley Beach Aftermath

We just returned to the house in Bradley Beach for the first time yesterday. Compared to many of the towns from Sandy Hook to Cape May, our town appears to have suffered relatively minor damage.

The dunes, which appear to have saved us from the worst destruction, have been largely destroyed. Many of the benches along the boardwalk have been washed away, but the boardwalk itself appears to be in good shape. The railings on the beach side and the stairs leading down to the beach have been damaged, or at best, buried in   sand.

A couple of the structures, most notably the gazebo on the border with Ocean Grove, have been destroyed, but many survived.

I noticed that a number of the houses along Ocean Avenue lost siding and shingles. From what I could see, the water only came about halfway up the first ocean block.

On Saturday, the town was busy removing the sand from Ocean Avenue.

Here are some of the pictures I took:

Beach Boxes Back on Bradley Beach Borough Beaches

It’s a sure sign that Spring has arrived. The Borough has moved the white beach boxes from the storage lot on Main Street to the parking lot at the northern end of Ocean Avenue.

Sorry for the alliteration, I couldn’t resist!

Errr…Winter in Bradley Beach

Well, the burst of Spring we experienced the last time I posted was short-lived. We came down to snow this weekend, although we had more snow where we come from up North. The good news is that we had a great day today, where the temperatures got up to over 50 degrees. It doesn’t yet have that Spring feel in the air, but I know it’s going to surprise us real soon!

Spring (in January)

It feels like Spring has arrived a little early in Bradley Beach! We were out walking on the beach this morning and it was 61 degrees with a light SW breeze. Maybe, if we can just get another couple of weeks of nice weather, we’ll get through the season without a mess like we had last year.

CooL RuNNinGs

There’s a new Jamaican Restaurant called “CooL RuNNinGs” which opened at 123 Main Street where Joey Gia’s Trattoria used to be. I haven’t tried it yet, but I can tell you that the name is a reference to the 1993 John Candy movie based on the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team to go to the Olympics.

Almost Christmas

Well, it’s almost Christmas at the shore. The captain just returned from a trip to the Gulf of Mexico, which was also decked out for the holidays, but doesn’t rival his home town. While drinking coffee and eating beignets at the Cafe Du Monde, it occurred to me that it might be nice to have something like that along Ocean Avenue. New Orleans may have beignets, some great music and wonderful food, but it doesn’t have the beach.

Happy Holidays to All!

Holidays at the Beach

I love this time of year at the shore. The weather is nice, although a little chilly, but the sky is clear, the beach is empty and the ocean is as beautiful as ever.
