Cubacan

I just had lunch in an excellent new Cuban restaurant, Cubacan, on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. It’s in the same building as Stella Marina and occupies the space where The Boards used to be.

The food is, in a word, excellent. They have a traditional soup which, if it were the only thing on the menu, would make the restaurant worth the visit. They offer Ceviche, a spicy dish of raw seafood marinated in citrus juices, as an appetizer. There are 4 varieties, shrimp, salmon, tuna and red snapper. There’s a sampler which includes any 3 of those 4. It’s also terrific. If you like the eclectic sushi offerings at Taka, you’ll love these appetizers.

There are a number of main courses and sandwiches, all prepared beautifully. They also have a selection of particularly interesting salads with a tasty house dressing.

The interior has been completely redesigned with a black and white motif and is much more open and pleasant than the Boards used to be. The waitress told us that they have either bands or a DJ on certain nights.

This is definitely worth a try if you’re looking for a nice place for lunch or dinner in Asbury Park!
